April is a fantastic time to make the most of the warm soils before the cooler conditions set in. Start preparing the soil, planning your next plantings, and enjoy a beautiful season ahead.

Top Tip: Refrigerate you Bulbs

Spring blooming bulbs require cold temperatures to trigger the growth of their flower bud in a process known as vernalisation. Without a chilling period, some bulbs may fail to bloom or produce stunted plants.

Bulbs should be placed in the fridge around six to nine weeks before planting to ensure they receive the necessary cold temperatures to grow and bloom effectively.

Bulbs make wonderful additions to the garden both in the beds or in pots. An interesting way to use bulbs is to choose a number of varieties to create a 'lasagne bulb pot', starting with larger varieties such as a Dutch iris at the bottom, followed by tulips or daffodils before a layer of grape hyacinth.

In any case, prepare your soil by incorporating CHOCKABLOK Super Compost and Rapid Raiser throughout. If you are growing in a container, ensure that you use a premium potting mix to which you’ve added Rapid Raiser. Bulbs can be planted between now and May and like to be planted at a depth of twice the height of the bulb.

Feeding of the bulbs after flowering is important because once the flowers are spent and the foliage starts to die back, they need nutrition to store next years flowers. This is when Sudden Impact for Roses, either liquid or pellets, should be applied and watered in well with GOGO Juice.
